Linguistic Traps
There are a number frequently used terms or expressions in Portuguese that result from incorrect or inaccurate translations of terms or expressions in a source language. One of the most widespread examples is the use of “ser suposto” to render the meaning of “be supposed to”.
It is not uncommon to encounter sentences such as this…
"The car was supposed to be new.”
… translated as follows:
“Era suposto o carro ser novo.”
or
“O carro era suposto ser novo.”
In reality, although such translations have spread far and wide, the most linguistically correct constructions in terms of Portuguese would be:
“O carro devia ser novo."
or
“Presumia-se que o carro fosse novo.”
This phenomenon is known as source language interference.
